The Souris & Area Branch again had a successful year in the 2007 season. New projects were in initiated. Much was done to assist our wildlife and wildlife habitat. This work could not have been done without the assistance of our funding partners.

Electrofishing

Emits low voltage electrical current to temporarily disable fish
~ Allows for the species identification, counting, measuring, and evaluation of area fish stocks
~ Sampling was performed on Cross River, Naufrage River, and Cow River
~ Conducted by Daryl Guignion of U.P.E.I.

Electrofishing: The Process

Nets are set-up both upstream and downstream to confine fish within sampling area.

~ The area the nets cover is 100 square meters.
~ Workers with dip nets retrieve fish shocked by electrical wand
~ Fish are held in pans until all sampling is complete
~ All fish are identified, counted, measured, and then released.

Pheasant Pens

Souris Wildlife brought in 45 Ring Necked Pheasants from Nova Scotia
~ Use as breeding stock to restore wild populations in the area.
~ Crew constructed a pen to assist volunteers in raising of brood stock.

Souris and Area Wildlife hosted a demonstration at the annual Souris Exhibition in September.
Exhibit hosted by Barry Wilson, Alban McKinnon, Waldron Leard, Susan Leard, and Jane Hanlon

Souris and Area Wildlife hosted their inaugural Wildlife Photo Contest
~ Sponsored by Main Street Home Building Center, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and Souris Wildlife
462 high quality entries received in 4 categories; Adult, University/College, High School, and Elementary
Judged by a committee of international photography experts

Website Launch

Souris and Area Wildlife, with the assistance of webmaster Waldron Leard, officially launched their website on November 10th.
Goals of the website are;
(1) provide an update of the daily activities of the Souris Branch, and (2) educational component
In the 10 months since website development began, we have had ~ 10,000 views.

Souris and Area Wildlife hosted its 27th. annual Fundraising Wildlife Dinner on December 9th.
Approximately 100 people served

2007 Farm Day Tour

Hosted in conjunction with the PEI Federation of Agriculture, Environmental Farm Plan Section
~ Approximately 100 PEI farmers attended
~ Group toured 5 Eastern Kings farming operations, highlighting environmentally sound practices
~ Presentation on EG&S Pilot Project given by Souris Wildlife

Bear River

Nitrate Clinic

On November 17th., Souris Wildlife hosted the inaugural Nitrate Clinic at the Souris Ski Club.

210 residents from the Eastern Kings Area brought in their water for free nitrate testing by technicians from the Provincial Dept. of Environment, Energy, and Forestry.
