The Souris Branch of the P.E.I. Wildlife Federation hosted its 3rd. Annual Digital Photo Contest. It was open to entries that were photographed or videoed on or later than January 1, 2009. The closing date for entry submission was midnight November 15, 2009. All photos and videos received, are displayed permanently on our website. Contest entrants were viewed in photo sets on flickr.com, when received. An international judging panel was established with individuals who have professional expertise in this field. Winners were notified as soon as the judging was complete. Awards were presented at the Souris & Area Branch Annual Wildlife Dinner on December 13, 2009. The Grand Prize was presented by MacPhee's Home Hardware Building Centre, Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Souris Branch of the P.E.I. Wildlife Federation donated a first, second and third prize for each category. A special judge's award was presented to the Most Promising Youth Photographer. The 2009 winner was Mari Humphrey.

Our 2009 Grand Prize was a Sony Cybershot 8.1 megapizel DSC-W150 camera with a 5x optical zoom. It included a battery charger, battery pack, USB cable, CD ROM and a wrist strap. Wildlife Federation Photo Contest This is our report of the judging panel for the 2009 edition of the Souris & Area Branch of the PEI Wildlife Federation photo contest. This contest opened on January 1, 2009. It closed at midnight November 15, 2009 AT. Through the services of flickr.com, we viewed 2133 photographs and videos. At contest close, we conducted a review. It was enjoyable to view so much beauty. Thank you for sharing your enjoyment of the wild. Each photograph was awarded points out of a maximum of 99. 1417 of the photographs were awarded marks of 80 or higher. 520 of the photographs were awarded marks of 90 or higher. The grand prize winner came from a final pool of 117 photographs. Our judging is subjective. These are our choices. They were difficult. Thank you to each entrant. Each picture we saw makes everyone and your region a winner. Our knowledge is that the Souris area is one of the most beautiful places we have visited. Whether you won a prize or not, smile inside and out. Our recommendation to the photographers is to continue. Take your camera with you always. We did not thin it possible but the quality of the submissions in 2009 is advanced over the first two years. Please read the rules before you submit a picture. Please enter the photos at their original size directly from the camera memory card. We strongly suggest all photographs entering this event must have the date stamp turned OFF.
