Watershed Planning For Basin Head - 2010

Public invited to discuss new Basin Head watershed plan

SOURIS — The citizens and friends of Eastern Kings are invited to attend a public meeting on Tuesday, March 30, to provide input before a new watershed plan is finalized.

“The meeting is an excellent opportunity for all stakeholders to give support to this progressive venture,” said watershed co-ordinator Fred Cheverie.

The meeting will be held at the Eastern Kings Recreation Center at 7:30 p.m. and is the result of work started well over a year ago.

In 2009, the Souris and Area Branch of the P.E.I. Wildlife Federation partnered with the Basin Head Marine Protected Area Advisory Board, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Eastern Kings Community Council to undertake watershed planning for the Basin Head Watershed.

The Basin Head Marine Protected Area was established in October 2005 to protect and conserve the unique strain of Irish moss that grows in the Basin Head lagoon, as well as the ecosystem that supports it.

One of only seven marine protected areas in Canada, Basin Head is one of just two such areas accessible by land and is the only one on P.E.I.

Cheverie said the watershed steering committee has met many times throughout the winter months and has developed a watershed plan that outlines the environmental and social issues that affect this watershed and the proposed strategies to mitigate any issues.
