| The Community Aquatic Monitoring Program (CAMP) has been administered by DFO in the Atlantic Region since 2003. Designed to monitor estuarine health, this program combines the technical expertise of DFO officials with the knowledge of local community groups. Beach seines are used to collect important data throughout the summer months, including abundances of important fishes and crustaceans. By employing a rigorous and consistent sampling regime, communities are able to identify trends in the diversity and biomass of their estuary from month to month and year to year. In addition to measuring physical parameters such as salinity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature, water samples are collected and analysed at each sampling station. This enables community groups to closely monitor water quality parameters such as nitrates, phosphates, and silicates in their estuary. This scientific approach to environmental monitoring applies principles that produce reliable results of great value to communities throughout Atlantic Canada. | |
A Video Introduction by Garry Gregory Videos from June 23, 2008 | The summer of 2008 marked the first season of the Souris Wildlife Branch's involvement in this program. In combination with the other monitoring programs in place in our area, the Branch is able to effectively assess the health of the Souris River, while identifying and mitigating issues contributing to its deterioration. The Souris Wildlife Branch is excited to participate in such a valuable endeavour, and looks forward to relaying pertinent results to the public in the near future.
