Our Local Ecology The Land - Heritage Roads Each P.E.I., narrow red clay lane is a special place, for with the advent of pavement, few remain. The Province of Prince Edward Island has designated 16 of these natural delights as Scenic Heritage Roads. Two of the survivors from the past are situated in Eastern Kings County.
| New Harmony Road North/South | New Harmony Road East/West | This road is situated north of the community of St. Catherines. It runs from the Greenvale Road to the Glen Road, formerly known as the West Tarantum. This area is a beautiful forest of hardwoods which meet overhead, reminding the walker of a tunnel, or a canopy. The canopy is a multitude of greens in the summer, and in the fall a riot of yellow, oranges, reds and golds. The area was once farmland, however a portion of it has been reclaimed by trees. The beautiful New Harmony Demonstration Woodlot is a safe place for walking - and a birder's paradise. |
This road, part of Route 303, travels west from the Baltic Road through Glencorradale, until it connects with the New Harmony Road. It was formerly known as the Glen Road. That name is now applied to another road, formerly know as the West Tarantum .The area was once a farming community with a school, mill and a blacksmith shop. Today the people are gone - but P.E.I.'s oldest living thing continues to grow, on the north side of the road. The Big Tree, an American Elm, is believed to be P.E.I.'s largest tree. |
