B.M.P. Field Tour

The P.E.I. Enhanced Envvironmental Farm Plan with the Souris and Area Branch of the P.E.I. Wildife Federation presented a B.M.P. Field Tour on July 31, 2007 throughout eastern Kings County. Over 100 perticipants departed Charlottetown in a motor coach and vans.

The first visit was to the Townshend Potato Company, situated in Rollo Bay West. The Townshend family was the recipient of the Hon. Gilbert R. Clements Award for Excellence in Environment Farm Planning. The soil conservation practices they employ were discussed, including computers and databasing management of the land the potatoes that are grown.

Becky Townshend of Fortune Organics, a certified organic farm, also spoke of the business she conducts delivering fresh produce to local restaurants and customers.

The next visit was to Lily Pond Farm in Bear River. The MacIsaac family were the 2007 recipients P.E.I. Soil and Crop Association's Soil Conservationist of the Year. The first presentation described how marshland was adapted to a Ducks Unlimited pond, providing habitat for wildlife.

Terracing grassed waterways and strip cropping were also discussed. The MacIsaac's have made strides in fertility management with a rigorous nutrient management program.

Lunch, with all P.E.I. products, was provided at the Souris Ski Club by Right Bite Catering, at Souris Line Road. Farmers in the Souris River watershed are partnering with the Wildlife Federation in an Ecological Goods & Services project. A presentation was made outling the project and the amounts of incentives that are being provided.

Following lunch, the group travelled to R. A. Rose & Sons Farm in Lakeville. The farm includes a potato operation and a milk transport business. A new method of hilling potato plants was described. The machinery is designed to conserve water and minimize runoff.

The participants also toured the East Point Wind Farm at North Lake, which commenced operation in January. Representatives from the P.E.I. Energy Corporation and Vestas reviewed the windmill operation and the landowner agreements.

A visit to the Big Tree in Glencorradale, believed to be Prince Edward Island's oldest living object, brought forth the historical aspect of the land and the island forests.

The last stop of the day was at Pondsedge Farms in Little Pond. The large dairy operation grows the majority of its feed, including barley, soybeans, corn sileage, sileage and hay. Additional information may be found here.
