While there is no evidence to suggest that coyotes are a danger to the safety of the residence of PEI, we have compiled the following information in response to local concern. These are only suggested safety procedures that have been compiled from the websites listed on the toolbar.
Take Precautions:
· Do not feed coyotes and be sure to properly dispose of garbage and other food sources. Coyotes that have access to our food lose their fear of people.
· Ensure children are accompanied by an adult at all times.
· Learn to recognize hazardous behaviors and situations.
· Walk/Hike with friends.
· Keep your pet leashed and close to you and be aware of your surroundings when walking.
· Make a coyote shaker can by taking a steel or high density aluminum can and placing a few coins in it. Tape the hole shut. It can then be shaken and even thrown in the direction of the coyote to scare it away.
· Carry a walking stick or large colorful umbrella when out on walks so that you can use it to fend off an animal. An open umbrella, for example, presents you as being much larger than the animal and may frighten it away.
· Wear clothes with striking colors when walking.
· A whistle, air horn, or thrown golf ball may be used to frighten off a wild animal. Wear a waist back and keep some of these items in it.
If you see a coyote at a distance:
· Stay back. Do not approach the animal.
· Watch it carefully to assess its behavior.
· Look for other animals.
If the coyote approaches or is close by:
· Maintain your distance. Do not turn your back. Do not flee.
· Back away slowly.
· Stay together.
· Make yourself appear larger by raising your arms and waving them. If you have a jacket or belt with you, wave it around over your head and yell in a loud low tone at the coyote.
· Identify and maintain escape routes.
· Stomp your foot and clap your hands to scare them.
If a coyote attacks:
· Fight back aggressively. Shout, throw stones or sticks; use whatever is available to defend yourself.
