Bald Eagle Perches

Poles were purchased from a local resident to form the Eagle perches. They were selected on the basis of height and size. Branches of at least 3 inches in circumference were cut and attached to the poles. They would provide a large landing area for the Eagles. Four perches were erected around the Souris River estuary in areas frequented by Eagles. Signs displaying pertinent information were installed in the area. They were successful in attracting birds such as Kingfishers, besides the Eagles.

In late fall it became common to spot eagles using them as the migratory birds passed through. Unfortunately a violent winter storm prior to Christmas wiped all four perches out.

In the spring of 2009, three were reinstalled using much larger size wood for the Bald Eagles to perch on. Research indicated that Bald Eagles prefer a 3-5 inch (7.5-12.5 cm) branch to sit on as they find it easier to grasp with their talons. Camella Cheverie has captured photos of the Bald Eagles resting on these perches in 2009.
