Family Fishing Day
Angling has long been a significant element of Souris area culture. The tranquility and scenery associated with fishing have made it one of the most popular recreational activities in our area, and such participation provides an important means of actively engaging the outdoors. Perhaps the most endearing quality of recreational fishing is that it is not limited by age or gender, and as such it offers the perfect opportunity for an enjoyable family activity.
The Souris Wildlife Branch recognizes the importance of these experiences in promoting both family bonding and an enthusiasm for the outdoors, and has made it a priority in recent years to make recreational fishing even more accessible and enjoyable for the people of the Souris area. In doing so, the Souris Wildlife Branch has hosted an annual family fishing day for for at least 15 years, a springtime tradition that celebrates this important part of our lifestyle.
The purpose is to get children, parents, and grandparents out for a fun day of recreational fishing in a stocked pond where they will be guaranteed action. This event includes a barbeque and a positive fishing experience. Young people are introduced to recreational sport fishing with no cost and adults are not required to have a license for fishing on this particular day. Wildlife members attend to enforce safety, bait lines, remove fish, solve tangles, illustrate knots and offer an introduction to fly-fishing. This is an annual event with the dates and times advertised in the local media.
