The Land - Hares

HareSnowshoe hare, varying hare - Lepus americanus

Characteristics

The snowshoe hare is sometimes called a varying hare because it changes colour from grayish brown in late spring, summer and early fall to white in late fall and winter. Melanistic mutants or black hare are also common in Prince Edward Island.

Snowshoe hare weigh from .91 to 1.81 kilograms (2 to 4 pounds) and have extremely large hind feet which serve to assist them in traveling over soft snow; hence the name snowshoe hare.

Habits

Thick brushy woods and dense alder or relatively open softwood swamps. In Prince Edward Island almost every thicket and small woodlot is populated by snowshoe hare.
