Shelter

On an overnighter, a proper night's sleep is as necessary food and ample water. It is wise to carry a tarp or lightweight tent. In bug season, the tent must be screened. Insect repellent is necessary. A ground sheet and pad is also a must. A waterproof ground sheet protects your sleeping bag from moisture, while a pad made of foam provides insulation and somewhat a bit of comfort. The pad is essential in winter. A sleeping bag does not insulate beneath the body.

Sleeping Bag

Much thought must be employed in the selection of a sleeping bag. There are many options. A down-filled bag offers gives the greatest warmth for the weight but must be kept dry. Wet down is useless. Fiber filled bags are heavier and bulkier. They offer the same warmth when wet. A cotton or flannel liner should be considered when using a bag with nylon interior. A small inflatable pillow will provide some comfort.
