Sediment Traps

Sediment (or silt) traps are large excavated holes dug directly in stream beds with special permits. In the fall of 2008 two such silt traps were established within the Naufrage Watershed to catch silt that flushes down a river in a heavy rain or a natural spring freshet.

A special excavator with a 60 ft. boom is required to dig these silt traps which measured approximately 200 ft. long, 20 ft. wide and 13 ft. deep. This is a very expensive activity but very worthwhile and efficient.

One of these silt traps in-filled to approximately 1/3 of its size over the winter months.
