Our Local Ecology Air & SkyEuropean Starlings | The European Starling is not a native bird to P.E.I. They were brought to New York City in 1890-91, and were released in Central Park. A Shakespeare Society wished to have all the birds mentioned in his plays live in North America. They soon spread across the continent, displacing other cavity nesting birds such as Eastern Bluebirds, Tree Swallows and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. There were many efforts control and eliminate the Starlings, but they have survived. Starlings, evn though not a prettybird, are interesting to watch and listen to. They often mimic other bird's calls. They find their food mostly along the ground, which means they are preyed upon by foxes. | | |
